CNTPO
The Department of Defense (DoD) is an integral part of the national commitment to reduce trafficking in illegal narcotics and material that supports global terrorist activities. Consistent with National Drug Control Policy and Public Law, the DoD Counter-Narcoterrorism Technology Program Office (CNTPO) has the lead for developing technology for interagency and multinational operations to disrupt, deter and deny narcoterrorist activities.
In 1996, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, was selected to serve as the Executive Agent for the DoD Counter Drug Technology Development Program Office (CDTDPO). In 2003 this mission was expanded to include global narcoterrorism and the office’s name was changed to the Counter-Narcoterrorism Technology Program Office (CNTPO). The goal of this office is to provide technology to the defense and civilian agencies and partner nations engaged in counterdrug and counter narcoterrorism operations. This is accomplished by working within the DOD and interagency environment to determine common mission requirements. The office leverages industry, academia, and government laboratories to develop and deliver prototype systems. Using a systems engineering approach, technologies are tested for compatibility in the operational environment and integrated into operational processes. Training and sustainment are also included with the systems. Protocols to deploy these technologies have been developed and multiple systems are in use with operational forces in the U.S. and partner nations. Selected technologies are also in use with law enforcement organizations.
